... And lo, God told me to walk among the ignorant masses and spread the
wisdom of the ages which had been bestowed upon me for this was my divine
burden...
I am certain that only by fate was I able to happenstance upon two curious
individuals. One appeared to be a male individual looking up into the sky
with craned neck, straining his eyeballs to see farther and wider. The other
appeared to be a female individual intensely staring at something tiny that
she held in the palm of her hand.
"What were these people doing?" I asked of myself. After a moment during
which I could discern no logical answer using the amazing power of my brain,
I deemed that these two were ignorant by their behavior and so, I went to
attempt to enlighten them (as this is my divine burden, as you will recall).
"Salutations!" I hailed, trying to attract their
attention. "May I ask what inane purpose requires this wasteful expenditure of human energy?"
The man said to me, "My name is Hugo and I am interested in the very large.
So today, I have decided to try to see as far and as wide as I can so that I
might see the biggest picture I can."
And right after Hugo finished speaking, the woman said to me, "And my name
is Tina. I am interested in the very small. So today, I have decided to try
to find the smallest living thing I can place in my hand without it
disappearing into nothingness. And I am not wasting my energy, I'll
have you know."
At that instant, the fact crossed my mind that ignorance is not necessarily
genetic since their parents had so aptly named their children...there might
be hope for these two yet!
First, I spoke to Hugo.
"Hugo," I began, "Why are you obsessed with the very large? And how might I
help you see the error of your ways so that you may be rehabilitated?"
Replied Hugo, "What do you mean? Isn't everyone obsessed with the
very large? Isn't the very large all that matters in life? Without keeping
your eye on the very large how can you live from day to day not knowing
where you'll be tomorrow? You have to look at the big picture to know where
and when the big things will happen. Otherwise, you might get squished out
of existence one day without even knowing it!"
"I see," I said. "Might you have any examples to support your rationale?"
"Well, take anime for instance," Hugo began to say.
"Wait a minute!" I interrupted. "Don't tell me you're an anime fan?"
"Why, yes, I am." Hugo replied.
I should have seen it coming. Its times like this that "divine burden"
really sucks. Suddenly, things started to make a lot of sense...
"Is there a problem?" asked Hugo.
"No, never mind. Please continue with your examples," I asked.
"Well, one of the aspects of anime that I like is the fact that they tell
stories that are big," claimed Hugo. "Stories about saving the world,
the origin of God, war between peoples, life and death, good vs. evil, the
future of Earth and our destiny as a race. These are all very
BIG THINGS!
"True," I added. "Anything else which you would consider 'big'?"
"There are also stories about who's the smartest, fastest, most skilled or
most powerful person in the world!" Hugo continued to blather on. "Stories
about people trying to change the world, topple an evil empire or striving
to be the best among formidable rivals. You gotta admit, those are pretty
big and impressive stories."
"Yes, you're right. Those are pretty big things," I admitted.
"And that's not all! There are also stories about super-science, fantastic
worlds of great adventures, time travel and space battles in which the fate
of universe hangs in the balance! These stories are 'big' because the
outcome of our Heroes usually affects billions of ordinary people!" raved Hugo.
"Enough!" I shouted. "I believe that you have described what is known as
'shonen anime' - something which I'm quite familiar with! It makes all too
much sense now why you are pre-occupied with the extremely epic. As a
hardcore fan of shonen anime, I'm afraid that there may be no hope for you.
I will pray that you finally tire of DRAGON BALL and the like and snap out
of your self-righteous delirium!"
I was feeling the beginnings of a massive headache coming on. So, as I was
staggering away, I decided to climb a nearby mountain so that I might speak
with God. When I reached the summit, the clouds had parted and I was bathed
in light and I shouted out, hoping that God would hear my cries, "O, why
must I suffer to carry out my divine burden? Why, in your infinite
generosity and mercy do you continue to torment me by crossing my path with
those afflicted by this disease of anime addiction? They are not ignorant!
They want to see only what they want to see. I cannot help these blithering,
inane anime fans who wish to be blind to the truth!"
I waited for a sign from God, but nothing happened. I waited for a while,
but still no sign from God. At that point, I decided to pray for Hugo that
he might soon tire of shonen anime, as I had promised him, and after which,
I started to climb down from the mountain.
Awaiting me at the foot of the mountain was Tina.
